Everything here applies to our work and to anybody else’s. None of it requires a product to be bought.
Cleaning
Warm water, a drop of washing-up liquid, and a soft toothbrush. Brush behind the stone rather than on top of it: the dullness you are trying to fix is almost always on the pavilion, where the light gets in.
Not on emeralds and not on pearls. An emerald is oiled and a pearl is a shell; both are wiped with a damp cloth and nothing else.
Storing
Separately. A diamond scratches every other stone, including other diamonds, and a bag of jewellery is a bag of small collisions. The pouches we send are one piece each for that reason.
The two-year check
Claws wear from the outside in, and by the time a stone moves the claw has been thin for months. On a ring worn daily, have the setting looked at every two years. We do it free, on our work and on anybody else’s, and it takes ten minutes.
What we will not tell you to do
Buy an ultrasonic cleaner. They are excellent, and they will shake a loose stone straight out of a worn setting — which is how most stones are actually lost.
